Laurence M. Gartel
Artist
For over 30 years, Mr. Gartel has been considered to be the “FATHER” of the Digital Art Movement around the world. His work has been exhibited at the Joan Whitney Payson Museum, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Norton Museum, the Princeton Art Museum, and PS 1. On top of that, his work has been exhibited in the Bibliothèque Nationale which is located in Paris, the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of American History which is located in Washington, D.C., and the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum which is located in London. |
Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Gartel went to the School of Visual Arts with fellow classmate Keith Haring. When he received the commission to do the album cover for Debbie Harry (Blondie), he taught Andy Warhol how to use the Amiga Computer. His electronic career began in the 70s working side by side with video guru Nam June Paik at Media/Study in Buffalo, New York.
Mr. Gartel has had a very colorful career creating art for celebrities such as Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Red Hot Chill Peppers, AC/DC, and Versace. He has also created art for Absolut Vodka (ABSOLUT GARTEL), Coca Cola, Forbes Magazine , the National Basketball Association, and many others. Additionally, Mr. Gartel has traveled to India for Universal Entertainment to create a documentary music/video. He also lectures around the world from Melbourne, Australia and Moscow, Russia to Orvieto, Italy.
The biography for his pioneering efforts is included in “Who’s Who,” “Who’s Who in the World,” “Who’s Who in the East,” “Who’s Who in America,” and “Who’s Who in American Art.” Mr. Gartels’ current project, “AUTO MOTION,” is a traveling exhibition based on the inspiration of the Ferrari automobile. A new, oversized, limited edition, gold embossed book has recently been released. Furthermore, he has just created the First Official Poster for the Naples International Film Festival. |
